Well debate surrounding anthropogenic climate change continues. On the same day the US Senate voted on Obama’s climate change and energy bill (26 June 2009), the NY Times published this article flagging unofficial dissent coming through from two economists within the US EPA organisational structure. The discord of their views with the official EPA position points to lingering doubts in some quarters about the merits of the international consensus view put forward by the IPPC and the basis of the proposed policies to tackle climate change. Undoubtedly, there are economic rather than scientific considerations at the heart of some of this dissent. However, the bill was only passed by 219 to 212 votes – and the narrow margin plus ongoing controversy suggests that the debate in the US over national climate change legislation is far from over.
