Having worked with companies on CSR since 1987, a decade ago I asked for my P45, left the security of employment and set out with David Logan to create our own management consultancy – unashamedly intending to create the best, most business-focused and internationally-orientated agency. Today it’s a source of pride and pleasure to have more than 30 colleagues, offices in London and New York and associates around the world.
The intervening years have brought unique opportunities to work on the inside with some of the world’s leaders in responsible and sustainable business – and the ability that brings truly to make a difference.
Along the way, I’ve combined business with active involvement in local government and as a volunteer with community groups too. Today I serve as an elected member of the London Assembly, and among other responsibilities have been appointed by the mayor to the London Sustainable Development Commission.
What gets me out of bed in the morning? Well, usually the noisy intervention of my kids. And actually that answers the ‘why’ question too… hopefully everything I try to do is in some small way helping make the world a better place, now and for future generations.
Past history: Economics degree from Durham University. Chartered accountant, qualifying with KPMG. Speech writer and legislative counsel, House of Lords. Director, Action Resource Centre (employee engagement charity, now part of BitC). Consultant with PRIMA Europe, public and community affairs agency. Founded Corporate Citizenship Briefing in 1991. Named by the London Evening Standard as one of the 1000 most influential Londoners for work on the environment. Served as a judge for IR Magazine’s best annual report award, for the Charities Aid Foundation Company of the Year and on the IPPR public involvement awards panel, among others.
