Mind the Gap
added on July 29, 2011 by Jessica Sultzer
Cut a billion here, raise a trillion there.
All part of the conversation over how to get the US back on track and put the world at ease. Raise the debt ceiling, commit to fiscal responsibility, and protect the US credit rating. But for many there is disagreement on the new revenue part of the equation. [...] -
Biofuels should be shot down!
added on July 28, 2011 by Jessica Wettstein
Is too much attention given to biofuels?
Yes. Biofuels are not as promising as they seem.
The fear is that more biofuels will mean less habitat for plants and animals. And it means competition with land for food crops, reducing supply and increasing prices.
Also, farming and processing the crops requires energy – this can make biofuels as [...] -
Chips with everything!

So McDonald’s are trying to make their Happy Meals healthier.
Something to be applauded? Not really.
This new US plan just halves the French fries they serve and offers fruit or veg instead. This won’t make the kids ‘happy’. More importantly, I don’t see how this new plan will make anyone worried about children’s health happy either.

When the taps run dry
added on July 26, 2011 by Nicole Clucas
Carbon management is in fashion, big time. Tesco and Walkers have carbon labelled products. This is an attempt to make footprints seem ‘real.’ There is money to be made in offsetting and on the carbon markets.
In contrast, water management has long been ignored. A fact highlighted by the recent EIRIS report on drought and the [...] -
This time it’s not leaves on the line.

So Network Rail have trouble hiring staff.
Is that any surprise given their consistent failings? Not really.
What is surprising is that even during the current economic climate, people can still afford to be selective about the kind of company they want to work for. You would think, given the scale of redundancy and restructuring programmes, employees [...] -
‘Food deserts’ in the US, really?
added on July 21, 2011 by Rupali Patni
Is the US suffering a food shortage? I did a double-take over today’s story about Wal-Mart helping to tackle ‘food deserts’ in the US. Following headlines about impending famine in Africa, this somehow seemed to jar.
Yet apparently, it’s true.
However, these food deserts are much more about the quality of food, [...] -
Australia raises the stakes on Palm Oil
added on July 20, 2011 by Yohan Hill
Trivial? So it would seem.
Australia’s anticipated move to force companies to label the palm oil content of their products may at first glance appear to be trivial, especially when trying to address a massive problem like tropical deforestation. But is it?
Rather unexpectedly, the Australians seem to have done something no one else has. Whilst most [...] -

Polar bears jump the gun
added on July 19, 2011 by Rebecca
Greenpeace is campaigning. They are trying to save the polar bears.
Nothing new there then.
However, the protest at Cairn Energy’s Edinburgh office yesterday by over 60 fur clad protesters was poles apart from the usual objection.
The subject of their protest is an event that is yet to happen. Greenpeace wants to see an oil spill strategy [...] -
